Microsoft has announced the latest version of its augmented reality (AR) headset HoloLens, which it hopes will revolutionise the smartwatch industry.
The new device, which is available now in a variety of colours, features a large screen, a curved, transparent glass body and a circular ‘headset’ for interacting with the device.
‘It’s the most innovative AR device to hit the market in decades,’ said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
The company said that it is now the largest vendor of AR headsets in the world.
HoloLens was initially developed for the HoloLens AR platform.
It uses an array of sensors to generate 3D images, then translates them into 3D space for users to interact with.
Microsoft says it is targeting the mobile market, and hopes to roll out the new AR device in India by the end of the year.
It has already sold more than 70,000 of the glasses to retailers and businesses.
The glasses are sold by Microsoft in India and by Amazon.com.
The devices are available for $799 and cost about $800 in the US.
